SAMPLE LESSON PLANS

Peer Review

For a sample of how I conduct a peer review in Technical Communications, see my document for the resume and cover letter peer review. Since the students are not qualified to provide an evaluation of their peers' writing, I direct them to answer simple yes/no questions about the documents. Later, I give instruction on how to revise if the reader answered "no" to any of the questions.
Lesson Plan

Here is a lesson plan for teaching how to write the introduction section for the literature review assignment. I use a combination of writing prompts, discussions, lectures, and application activities in every class period. I focus on the current assignment while also encouraging students to transfer the lesson to other writing situations. By interleaving certain concepts throughout the semester, I am able to facilitate transfer.
Activity

This document displays an activity that I conduct with my Technical Communications students as we begin to discuss the literature review assignment. Since most students are unfamiliar with this genre, I have them to find an example and conduct genre analysis.  In the next class period, we will pool our knowledge to figure out what the conventions of a literature review are so they can write one of their own.
Syllabus

This document represents a typical syllabus for my Technical Communications course.
Rubric
I use this rubric to evaluate the technical instructions assignment. The students have access to this rubric beforehand so that they are aware of my expectations. I try to be transparent in my teaching and evaluating practices.
